The Fertilizer Institute Announces New Staff Addition
The Fertilizer Institute (TFI) today announced the appointment of Lara Beal Moody to the new position of Director of Stewardship Programs. Prior to joining TFI, Moody served as the program manager for the Agricultural Waste Management Laboratory at Iowa State University. In her position with TFI, Moody will be responsible for developing and directing the Institute’s stakeholder outreach programs to promote nutrient stewardship at the field level. Specifically, she will promote the 4R Nutrient Stewardship System which promotes the use of the right nutrient source at the right rate, at the right time and in the right place. The Fertilizer Institute Commends Passage of CFATS Reauthorization Bill Without Inherently Safer Technology
On July 28, the U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs voted unanimously to amend the Chemical and Water Security Act of 2009 (H.R. 2868), which was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives in November 2009. The House passed bill was replaced with a substitute amendment offered by Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) that will reauthorize the existing Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Standards (CFATS) program through Oct. 4, 2013 and without any government mandates for the use of Inherently Safer Technology (IST) provisions. The Fertilizer Institute (TFI), a national trade association representing U.S. fertilizer manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers, many of which are regulated under CFATS, was pleased with the Senate Homeland Security Committee’s passage of a reauthorization bill that does not include IST. The Fertilizer Institute Announces Fertilizer 101 Initiative
The Fertilizer Institute (TFI) today announced the launch of a “Fertilizer101” initiative, aimed at providing the people of the fertilizer industry, their allies in the agriculture community and the general public with a central source of information on fertilizers. Key components of the initiative are a Fertilizer 101 book and a corresponding fertilizer101.org Web site.

The Fertilizer Institute Joins 48 Agricultural Organizations in Supporting Murkowski Disapproval Resolution
The Fertilizer Institute (TFI) joined 48 agricultural trade associations in sending a letter to members of the Senate in support of S.J. Res. 26, a resolution introduced by Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), to revoke the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) authority to regulate greenhouse gases (GHGs) under the Clean Air Act. TFI President Ford B. The Fertilizer Institute Speaks Out on Potential Impacts of Kerry-Lieberman Climate Change Bill
The Fertilizer Institute (TFI) commented today on the potential impact to the U.S. fertilizer industry of climate change legislation introduced by Sens. John Kerry (D-Mass.) and Joseph Lieberman (I-Conn.). “The climate change legislation introduced today by Sens. Kerry and Lieberman provides government incentives that will encourage a wide range of utilities to switch to natural gas as an alternative for generating energy, as well as incentives for natural gas vehicles,” said TFI President Ford B. West. “This will undoubtedly increase the demand for and price of natural gas which there is no substitute for in the manufacturing process of nitrogen fertilizers.” Click here for more.

TFI Questions EPA Water Quality Standards for Florida
The Fertilizer Institute (TFI) garnered the support of 86 agribusiness and business organizations in questioning the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) efforts to impose drastic new water regulations in the state of Florida. The groups strongly criticized the scientific basis for the agency’s “Proposed Water Quality Standards for the State of Florida’s Lakes and Flowing Waters,” and expressed concern regarding the rule’s impact on Florida’s economy in three separate sets of comments filed this week with the agency. “Recommended Practices for Loading/Unloading Anhydrous Ammonia Rail Tank Cars in North America - Reduce and Eliminate Non-Accidental Releases” is a TFI brochure that is accompanied by a DVD sponsored by Transportation Community Awareness and Emergency Response (TRANSCAER), a voluntary national outreach effort of which TFI is a member, as well as the Association of American Railroads. This brochure and DVD are available free of charge to anhydrous ammonia shippers and to affiliated State and Regional associations for distribution with members who are receivers of anhydrous ammonia by rail.

2008 Commercial Fertilizers Report Available
The 2008 edition of the Commercial Fertilizers report, a cooperative effort between The Fertilizer Institute (TFI) and the Association of American Plant Food Control Officials, has been finalized and copies are available for purchase. Basic findings from the report show a 6.3 percent decline in U.S. fertilizer consumption to 21.468 million tons for the fertilizer year ending June 30, 2008. New Videos from IPNI Feature 4R Nutrient Stewardship
4R Nutrient Stewardship is focused on four central components: applying the right fertilizer source at the right rate, at the right time, and in the right place. Each component is directly related to the other three in at least one way, interconnected into a unified, effective system. Two new video programs produced by the International Plant Nutrition Institute (IPNI) and introduced in 2010 are carrying the message of 4R Nutrient Stewardship to audiences around the world.
